House and Senate Slash Science Budget Increases

Courtesy of Slashdot’s post House and Senate Slash Science Budget Increases I just learned of a cut in our national scientific research budget for next year. The Slashdost post links to the article A Budget Too Small, which contains the details of this short-sighted move, a move that will without doubt make our nation less competitive in the years to come.

I would, however, suggest a minor alteration to Slashdot’s title for the article:

HouseDumb and SenateDumber Slash Science Budget Increases

It was not always so. In days gone past Congress took a much more far-sighted view in investing in basic science and education. See for example my post Thomas L Friedman – China: Scapegoat or Sputnik.

Congress might also take note that, while the XO Laptop was designed in the United States, it is being manufactured in China. Moreover, I bet that it will be deployed much more widely within China than within the United States within the next few years.
