I was so excited to see a wonderful package from you when I returned after a month of being on the road barrel racing! I went to the post office today and picked up the laptop!

I met with our principal and we decided to have a poster contest as a way of giving out the laptop!

I promise to keep you informed - it should be in our local Navajo Times in a week!

Thank you so much!

Hello Bill!

I just saw your writeup per 9/10/07, and hope you can answer our question...

We have a java-based "natural time in real-time" KinderClock (see GreenTyme [dot] org) which currently is free on the Web, and which we now want to make avaialbe at VERY low prices as standalone clocks. What we need is a very low cost (stripped down) computer platform that can run our KinderClock java app and connect to a low priced color LCD display. Note: we have reason to believe that our kind of "natural time" clock may well help people with illnesses and diseases (such as Alzheimer's, Pick's, migraines, etc) which recent research shows have biological clock impairments.

Any suggestions about how we should proceed using some off-the-shelf solution, it must be UL Laboratory approved!

Warm regards, Yale

there are two other hardware items which beg comparison, one is the XO screen being outdoor readable and the other is the XO water resistance and shock resistance( drop-testing ). These seem to me to be the things which really take the Classmate out of the category of the kind of device the XO was designed to be and is manufactured to be. Not just a device for small fingers/kids but a device for their environment.

aim.com won't work because the browser on the XO laptop is single threaded (only supports one window) and (if memory serves) aim.com needs to spawn multiple browser windows to work. (I can't check if this is still the case on a full-fledged browser because i am at a friend's house on my XO laptop right now.)

however, meebo (meebo.com) works. you can use AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! messenger on meebo

Mr. Shields, (Claudia's husband Jeff on this end! )

Thank you so much for the kind words about Claudia and her impassioned speech. The XO laptop is a wonderful concept and perfect for the poor here on the reservation. I write grants, work for LeapFrog Schoolhouse and raise horses and no one can seem to grasp the concept of poor in America!

Quick story on Claudia...three weeks ago she volunteered for bus duty. She rode about 3 hours to various homes and was appalled by the lack of electricity, plumbing, and basic necessities many of her students experienced. Claudia took a Leapster Learning computer game along - looks like a nintendo but is educational and fun (oh no!). The one little boy from the poorest home just was enthralled.

That being said - I know that your computer gift will be used to the max! I know Claudia is thrilled and I sent a quick article to the Navajo Times editor.

Thank you!
